I hitched more than 100
I hitched more than 100 times on Dutch petrol stations and staff never spoke to me in a negative way. However, this depends to a great extend to the behaviour of the hitchhiker. When you run around from car to car it can bother the staff. Thus far I have been offered paper and black marker once, a petrol station worker arranged a ride for me once, and a cup of tea. It was just 10 days ago, the last cup of tea. When the paydesk student waved me to get in, I was first wary, prepared for some unfriendliness. But, in the right moment my karma was pepped up in the perfect way. After the tea he gave me a lot of freedom to speak to drivers. I always feel that I must be modest and quiet when asking around. I do quite some times hop into the shop to get me a cup of tea or something.
Just one time, petrol station on the border between Heerlen NL and Aachen D, a petrol station worker was LOOKING at me in a very unpleasant way (he was standing out of the shop).
Really, the way the workers look at a hitchhiker depends very, very much on the hitchhikers' behaviour. We need to be modest :) :) :)
One time I got a ride from a Shell worker, after he ended his job that evening. He explained that part of the petrol station is owned by the petrol company, and on this part they are allowed (or according to internal rules of Shell) should request people who talk with the people who fill up their tank not to do this. This is not a strict anti-hitchhiker policy, and is more intended for people who really annoy the car drivers, or people who try to sell things on the street (eg gipsies on petrol station De Lucht in the middle of the Netherlands along A2, who sell gold, as the petrol station worker gave as example, on that petrol station there are (or were) even signs warning against this...).
