Many drivers but also many hitchhikers are foreigners or they have a foreign background. Recently I got a ride from Wien to Passau from a very sympathic German couple who had moved to Hungary three years ago.

In fact on a hitchhiking journey accross several European countries usually foreigners (travellers) are the ones who serve the long rides. Almost always the longer rides on my hitch travels between the Netherlands and Poland have been Polish people, or Dutch, British, French... and rarely Germans helped out for more than 150 km (there is some 600-700 km of Germany between the Netherlands and Poland). However, I think that Germans especially from former DDR feel like taking hitchhikers from former east to former west and v.v. more than taking within former DDR and BRD. Perhaps... ;) Yes in fact, the two longest rides that I got from a German license plate concerned Polish people living in Germany. Thus: foreigners !

Another recent German ride was given by a well known volleyball trainer from east Germany who had been living in the Netherlands for years !

Foreigners supposedly have more guaranteed travellers' soul !

Definitely the foreigners serve way more rides than blond 25 year old nurses heading for the hospital ;)
