Hi all,

I've hitched quite a lot in Italy (around 17,000 km) and I would rate it very good, just a bit worse than Germany, provided you stick to the Autostrada's and their Area Servizio's (AS, aka Raststaettes)

My average waiting time in Italy has been around 1 hour, but that includes such things as getting something to eat or drink or going to the toilet. My shortest wait was 9 minutes, the longest 5:50, and in total 46 of the 72 waits were less than one hour.

As for sleeping, you can usually find decent places just off the AS'es, but I've slept on them, which might actually be safer...

As for distance, I've done Brenner to Bari/Brindisi (or the other way around) several times in well under a day, Berlin to Ancona should be doable in 24 hours with a bit of luck.

As for legalities? Never had any problems!
