Berlin to Lisbon
Hey guys!
I'm a first-time hitchhiker and I want to travel to Lisbon in a few
weeks. But unfortunately I'm still alone. Where can I find some
companions maybe for partly or fully hitching with me to Portugal? Or
does anybody have some tipps for me I have to remind while travelling
through the Iberian peninsula? :)
Thanks for your replies!
Greets,
Marc from Berlin
Olá Marc:
There's much more to see in Portugal than just Lisbon. I'm in Portugal
since a month now, and I can show you around a little bit once you arrive.
Google maps tells you to go via Paris and Bordeaux, but I think hitchhiking
out of BOTH of these cities is difficult.
Bordeaux might not be difficult for a man to hitch out of, but for a single
girl (me), it was awful and disgusting, as the men
who stop their cars think (or want / expect / whatever) you to be a
prostitute (no, I was NOT dressed like one), since
many prostitutes hang out near THE hitchhiking spot (the entrance to the
elevated rocade that encircles the city).
If you go instead via Lyon and Toulouse, there is a huge peage just after
Lyon that usually produces good results, and Toulouse
has a few metro stations near highway onramps and is generally really easy
to hitch in and out of :)
In Spain: if you want to cross diagonally after the Basque country (avoiding
Madrid: hard to get out of but also do-able, especially if you speak good
Spanish), you go through Valladolid and Salamanca, which are both very small
and seemingly in the middle of nowhere. There is not a lot of car-traffic
on this route, and most are going short distances and during the DAYTIME
only, however, there are A LOT of Portuguese camions (trucks) going this
route and straight to Lisbon. They usually tale 1,5 days to make the trip
from the border of Spain/France to Lisbon (or at least the outskirts/suburbs
of Lisbon).
In Portugal, there is a big and well-frequented service station near
Santarem, and if you are going to any place besides Lisbon (or want a ride
straight to the CENTER), ask your drivers to drop you there. It's a good
hitching spot to get to Lisbon and others (Algarve, Torres Vedras, Porto,
Tomar, Sintra, Coimbra, wherever... it's pretty centralized and has a good
amount of traffic compared to other service stations along Portuguese
highways). And, generally Portuguese like and trust well-dressed people! A
sign usually helps a lot at that station, and of course, a smile!
tchau,
amylin

Olà Amylin and the others!
Muito obrigado for your fast reply! Hm, primarily I want to visit
Lisbon, cause my girlfriend has gone there and she will stay for five
months. And I want to hitchhike cause of the beautiful country-sides
waiting for me. But I think nearly every backpacker dues to this. So
my destination is - maybe unfortunately for more beautiful
impressions - clear :)
Hm, I heard it too, that it's could be difficult to get through the
spanish territory. So a few people went by train from Spain to
Portugal. Some friends of mine went to Granada hitchhiking in only
30h! Do you think it's better to start the journey a bit earlier?
Maybe in mid of September?
I don't speak any Spanish and not that good French except of
salutation, so I have to brush it up a bit before I'm getting started.
Ciao, Marc

Hmm... A lot of people say "hitchhiking in Spain is really hard", but it has
never been my experience. But, I also speak very good Spanish. And I look
kinda Spanish. I look like... I could be from anywhere (anywhere people are
dark-haired, dark-skinned, and dark-eyed). For me, hitchhiking in France is
hard; not because cars don't stop (they do!), but because the people that
stop so often are really disgusting pervert-men, and I find myself often
encountering these same problems in France, regardless of appearance (which
is clean, no-nonsense).
I say "Just go for it and see what works." Also, I hear trains are cheap in
Spain and Portugal. But, I prefer hitchhiking, because it does work very
well for me. Start whenever you feel like. Isn't freedom the good thing
about hitchhiking? You don't have to set the exact itinerary.
So, my question for you is: How is your girlfriend staying in Lisbon for 5
months? Did she find an apartment to live in? An internship? A job?
I am trying to live (I mean LIVE!) in Portugal for longer, in my own place.
I'd like to have an apartment and job and all of that "ordinary people"
stuff... for maybe 3 months. Do you (or she) have any tips for me on how to
find nice, cheap places to rent and ways to get work there?
