Hitch-hiking in Italy is nearly as easy as in Germany, just move from one Area Servizio [AS] to the next and ask around, in northern Italy you can sometimes get away with German or English, further to the south you'll need a few words of Italian and a map.

Toll stations are another option, but I've only ever used them during my first trip through Italy, lacking a map of the AS'es at the time.

Either way, getting from the Brenner (my usual entry point into I) to Ancona and even Bari/Brindisi in a single day has rarely been a problem.

Ich hab demnächst auch vor nach Italien zu stoppen.
Das mit dem innerhalb von einem Tag bis nach Brindisi hört sich ja schon mal sehr gut an.
Prino, du scheinst dich auszukennen: Ist es möglich, dass ich einfach irgendwo am Strand schlafen kann? Gibt's Gebiete die touristisch weniger stark erschlossen sind bzw. welche sollte man meiden?

I've spent a few nights out in the open in Italy, but I would suggest that you are, especially further to the south, are a bit more careful than anywhere else. I wouldn't recommend sleeping on a beach, unless there are already plenty of other people around. However, if you find secluded places and are able to get to them without being seen, it should be, like anywhere else, no problem.

Or find a place where nobody would expect you - in 1994 I slept in the middle of the flowery/bushy circle on the Area Servizio Rubicone :)
