And what is exactly your strategy to pass. So, Oostende-Hull is open again? It used to be closed, isn't it! Can you ask for rides easily at the port? Since, if you go over Calais-Folkestone (tunnel) the best is to ask for rides at Jabekke service area west of Gent.

ja, ging alles gut. ich bin am sonntag morgen mit dem zug und bus nach dover, um sicher zu stellen dass ich dort wirklich gegen elf uhr bin (rechne inzwischen fuenf stunden fuer die ueberquerung ein, eine stunde wartezeit, ne stunde fuer um auf die faehre zu warten, zwei stunden auf der faehre und ne stunde zeitverschiebung...). die zug und busfahrt war dabei wirklich ein chaos, ich musste drei mal umsteigen und hatte jedes mal zwischen 10 und 50 minuten zu warten... da wundere ich mich echt was der unterschied zum trampen ist. ja, wohl der preis den man dafuer bezahlt...

in dover angekommen und alles ging dann recht flott und flieszend. ich hatte direkt an meiner tankstelle (siehe liftershalte/maps.hitchwiki.org) einen belgier (er war in wales als jurymitglied fuer arabische vollblueter - spannend!). sommerzeit ist wohl auch rentnerzeit und die faehre war voll mit (P&O) diesen, alle in nem bus zum shopppen in belgien oder frankreich... ahhhhh, help!... wieder hatte ich kein glueck um jemanden zu finden der bis nach bruessel fuhr und deshalb stieg ich dann wieder bei meinem belgier ein... bei adinkerke (erste auf-/abfahrt in belgien, geht klasse da dort ein freizeitpark ist und ein wunderschoenes stueck kueste das viele besuchen...) stieg ich dann aus und keine zwei minuten spaeter wurde ich von einem franzosen bis kurz vor antwerpen mitgenommen (ich habe recht schnell aufgegeben mein schul-franzoesisch zu ueben und die atille genossen). eine familie (gerade ein haus an der kueste gekauft, da die zwei teener so gerne surfen!) hat mich dort angesprochen - "wir sind in unseren jungen jahren im urlaub mal bis nach barcelona getrampt" - und mich dann bis nach antwerpen gefahren. von dort bis kurz vor genk, dann maasmechelen, lanaken und dann noch selbst einen lift in maastricht selbst (netter architekt aus dem norden der niederlande - platschi, ich haette dich beinahe besucht! ;) - der gerade bei seinen eltern auf besuch war).... paar nette unterhaltungen, sieben lifts und wohl im ganzen so zwischen ner halbe und ner stunde warten, vorallem auf die letzten kurzen lifts haben etwas laenger gedauert... wobei ich nicht jammern moechte da ich wohl nie laenger als zehn minuten warten musste.

jupp frank, ich nehm eigentlich immer jabbeke um mir meinen letzten lift nach england zu angeln (was nun wohl schon so um die zehn mal war). dies stellt eigentlich kein problem dar und von dort kommt man immer bis nach london (als ich auf der fahere rumgefragt hatte wurde mir 2 x london, 1x edinburgh und 1x wales angeboten, um hier mal nur die angebote der freundlichen leute aufzuezahlen... beim zurueck ist eigentlich immer paris dabei).

ahja, und um aus maastricht raus zu kommen habe ich auch was neues (die busse hatten ja gestreikt). anstelle der ampel beim brusselse poort einfach gleich den belgischen bus (hasselt) bis nach lanaken nehmen (kostet 1,60 euro was echt geht)... an der ampel wurde ich schon das ein oder andere mal von der polizei gestresst, da ist es in belgien doch relaxter und da ist auch mehr platz fuer die autos um anzuhalten...

Maastricht towards Brussels / Antwerp (and UK), my favorite ways:

1. Bus to Maastricht Brusselse Poort, then walk to Via Regia square, behind it stick up your thumb, towards Veldwezelt. In Veldwezelt hh at bus stop behind the roundabout in the middle of the village. Just before Bilzen get a lift to Hasselt at the beginning of the N702 (behind roundabout). In Hasselt the onramp "Hasselt-West" is by far the most easy, have a sign Brussels or Ant at hand. Then you're set because the first motorway service area is btwn Hasselt and Leuven, or btwn Hasselt and Geel.

2. Start at Maastricht official hh-spot next to the football stadium, beginning of A2. Put up the thumb, explain a driver going on further on the A2 towards Roermond/Venlo/Eindhoven to drop you at the first exit of the A76 (dir. HEERLEN!!!!), A76 exit 2 (Geleen). They make 2 x 1.5 km more, but helps you a lot. Also did that most recently to get to Berlin Beach Camp over Aachen, it's longer, but can be faster :)

Ah now I see, you want to go to Lanaken to hh to Maasmechelen from there. Yep, that's also possible.

Sorry, my mistake. I actually meant to get out of the bus in Veldwezel (near the roundabout in the middle of city) instead of just taking the bus Brusselse Poort, then walk to Via Regia square and hitchhike there...

Hm, ya, 0,90 euro for the bus to Brusselse Poort or 1,60 euro for the bus to Veldwezelt :). Not a big difference, I've always toroughly enjoyed my lifts btwn Maastricht and Veldwezelt though :D

What you pay depends if you have got a Strippenkart or not... isn't it? I guess most tourists and thumber do not... I never had to wait long at the traffic light neither, but from time to time the police is a bit of a pain in the ass and they tell you to move on... so, why not? No loss of time, less walking, not much more to pay, less hassle...

Ah, but I love the hiking part of hitchhiking, and I always have a strippenkaart with me :). I'm not a tourist, I'm a professional hitchhiker! Anyway, we're talking details; the main point: there are several ways to leave Maastricht to the west! For the overview of good hh spots in the Netherlands (http://www.franknature.nl/hitchhike/hitchhike.htm) the spot in Veldwezelt may be good to mention indeed because many ppl don't have a strippenkaart, however that's one out of some 100+ Dutch spots described by me, to which you'd actually take a bus... Oh Maastricht-Veldwezelt (10 km) by bus 1,60 euro, Maastricht-Hasselt (35 km) with the same bus 2,50 euro... :D So well, I forgot the route, if it stops near the roundabout east of Bilzen, then you'd not make a bad choice going there by bus :D :D :D
